Tips from a Frugal Housewife

Welcome to Tips From a Frugal Housewife, the tip I am sharing with you today is one of my very favorites!

Garlic, we all use it when cooking, personally I use a ton of the stuff. I don't have time to peel and press garlic every time I use it, so I came up with the following method.

It is so much cheaper than buying those little jars, and it does not sit in that oily preservative stuff.

Buy a huge container of whole peeled garlic (I found mine at Costco, I think Sams Club has them too)

Get out a large bowl and your Food Processor with the regular blade

Place 1/3 of the whole garlic into the process or and whirl until it is YOUR desired consistency, this is how I like mine

Place into a bowl and pulse the remaining two thirds of the garlic until it is all nicely chopped

Place back into the original container, and some into a smaller container you can keep in your fridge for daily usage

Place the large container in your freezer, it will freeze for years, literally

When you run out of garlic in your small container, remove the big one from the freezer, let it thaw just a bit, dig out as much as you need to re-fill your small container, then back into the freezer till next time!

I've never used the jarred stuff, and I've not purchased whole, peeled garlic like this before ... however, I just saw a program on Christopher Ranch and was very impressed with their operation. I have some of their heads of garlic, and they are wonderful. I didn't know this was sold at Costco. I'll have to pick some up next time I'm doing a Costco run. Every year I beg my family to attend the Gilroy Garlic Festival. I'll get there someday!

Oh for goodness sake! The comment labeled Cayleigh is actually from me. This in home computer network set up thing is convenient except for when I'm logged on at the same time as my kids, and end up leaving comments under their names. *sigh*

Yep...I learned that after wasting most of a Costco sized tub after it went moldy in the fridge. The only difference now, is that I freeze mine in small batches and re-use the containers. Great tip C!

That's a really good idea! I'd gone to powder b/c I couldn't handle peeling and chopping for each recipe. Great tip!

I will pass this tip on to my hubby, as he always seems to end up with the garlic peeling and chopping. Well, he likes to help out. :-)
